Ibadan Poly students protest against non-mobilization for national service

Hundreds of students from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in Oyo State, took to the streets on Monday to protest against the institution’s failure to mobilize them for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. The NYSC is a mandatory one-year national service for graduates of universities and polytechnics, aimed at fostering national unity and development.

The protesters shut down the institution’s main gate and other entrances, demanding that the school and NYSC authorities take immediate action to address the issue. According to Alhaji Soladoye Adewole, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, the problem isn’t unique to The Polytechnic, Ibadan, but rather affects all schools running part-time programs.

It appears that a policy change has impacted students who completed their National Diploma (ND) part-time and then pursued Higher National Diploma (HND) regular programs. Previously, these students were eligible for NYSC, but the new policy has revoked this eligibility.

The matter is currently being looked into, and the institution’s management has engaged with NYSC officials to find a solution.
