Negligence of Ondo State students by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu

…..Olayori Ademola’s unjust death raises concern among the students.

The horrific reign of impunity, a deeper look into the manner by which undoubtedly the Western Nigeria Security Network(WNSN) codenamed “AMOTEKUN” operates and the unjust killing of Olayori Ademola, a ND 1 Student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic tends to expose the negligence of the entire students of Ondo State by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Yet, under the 1999 Constitution as amended, the governor is saddled with the responsibility of securing lives and property of people in Ondo State and that is why he is labeled as the Chief Security Officer of the State.

The ugly incident that happened on 8th of July, 2022, further buttresses the total negligence of Ondo Sate Students by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. The students has never been a priority in his administration, judging from the increments of tuition fee to the several impunities committed, right under his nose. The office of the SA, Youth and Students was vacant for months, The International Student’s Day has not been observed for a very long time, the SA, Youths and Students who is not a prominent cabinet member sometimes lobby his way to pass pressing issues pertaining the Students to the Governor and till present, the Commission for Youth and Sport hasn’t deem it fit to address the entire students’ populace on the issues relating to the death of a student.

Regardless of how they choose to explain his death, established facts remains that; Olayori Ademola was a Student, was unarmed during his arrest, suffered a gun shot wound for 10days, was initially taken to a local herbalist for extraction of bullet pellets lodged in his stomach and thigh, before he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo, where he gave up. No single police report before his death, and was declared a criminal before trial which is against his fundamental right as a citizen of Nigeria (presumption of innocence) that is, every person accused of a crime is presumed to be innocent unless and until his guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt. If they were to explain; what exactly has he done to deserve death? Perhaps they will inform us of the never ending pain that we will become incapable of healing from. we have already been made to live with the exhausting challenges that under the Akeredolu led administration, the students rights were tampered on.

The Operation “AMOTEKUN” have been indulged for a while now and under the special protection of Mr. Governor, they have this idea that they are above the law. but sadly, power is transient. on the other hand, it’s disturbing that no Member of the Ondo State House of Assembly has said anything about the death of Olayori Ademola till date. the same lawmakers that passed the Amotekun bills into law, or were they elected to make laws that will kill everyone of us? Other state invests in their Students but reverse is the case in Ondo state.

The students wants a thorough investigation to reveal the untold incident that led to the death of one of us or we continue to see Mr. Governor as a SAN who supported impunity during his administration.
