FG Commences Payment of Previously Withheld ASUU Salaries

The Federal Government has initiated the disbursement of salaries that were previously withheld from members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), confirmed by the Chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin.

Following months of uncertainty and financial strain, a ray of hope has emerged for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the Federal Government has begun the process of paying off withheld salaries. The Chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, officially confirmed the development, stating, “Yes, it is true. Payment has started rolling in.”

This significant step follows President Bola Tinubu’s authorization in October 2023 to release four months’ worth of salaries that had been held back by ASUU. The gesture aimed to alleviate the financial burden faced by academic staff across the nation, with the total owed amounting to eight months’ worth of salaries.

The delayed payment of salaries had placed immense strain on ASUU members, affecting their livelihoods and hindering their ability to effectively carry out their academic duties. However, with the commencement of salary disbursements, there is renewed optimism among ASUU members, signaling a potential resolution to the longstanding dispute.

While this initial payment is a promising development, ASUU continues to advocate for the complete settlement of all outstanding salaries owed to its members. The successful resolution of this issue would not only alleviate financial distress but also contribute to fostering a conducive academic environment within Nigeria’s universities.

As ASUU members await the full settlement of their salaries, the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the academic community remains under scrutiny. However, the commencement of payment represents a significant step forward in resolving the protracted dispute between ASUU and the government, offering a glimmer of hope for educators across the nation.
