Minister Assures Action on Detained Journalist, Emphasizes Press Freedom Responsibility

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, assured the public of ongoing efforts to address the detention of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist associated with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

Speaking at the Press Freedom and Good Governance Awards in Abuja on Saturday night, the minister underscored President Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to ensuring journalists’ work proceeds without hindrance.

Idris emphasized the paramount importance of press freedom, asserting that while it is crucial to uphold this freedom, journalists must exercise their responsibilities diligently. He warned against the spread of disinformation and fake news, emphasizing the need for accountability in media practices.

Acknowledging recent challenges, particularly regarding the detention of a journalist by security agencies, Idris affirmed that the issue has either been resolved or is in the process of being addressed.

He further noted ongoing efforts to resolve another similar case, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting journalists’ rights and ensuring their safety in the pursuit of their professional duties.
