Tragedy Strikes as Lion Kills Zookeeper at Obafemi Awolowo University

In a shocking turn of events, tragedy struck at the Zoological Garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as a 9-year-old male lion fatally attacked a zookeeper during feeding time on Monday.

The victim, identified as Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated Veterinary Technologist, had been overseeing the care of the wild cats at the zoo for over a decade. Mr. Olawuyi’s deep commitment to his role was evident, having nurtured the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, issued a statement expressing condolences and shedding light on the tragic event. He stated, “Mr. Olawuyi has been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about 9 years ago but, tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them.”

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with caring for wild animals, even under controlled environments. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack unfold, the university community mourns the loss of a dedicated staff member whose passion for animal care endeared him to colleagues and students alike.

Efforts to ensure the safety of zoo personnel and visitors are expected to be reviewed and strengthened in the wake of this tragic event, as authorities work to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
